Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-- These offshoots of the photographically outstanding "Eyewitness" books (Knopf) are equally attractive, smaller in size, and, as their titles suggest, emphasize the sensational aspects of their subjects. Starting with a general statement ("What is a frog?"), 11 intriguing topics are presented, with each double-spread dominated by a spectacular color photo. Short, snappy facts, observations, or folklore allusions loosely linked to the topic are placed around the focal photo, each one illustrated by a small full-color sketch, cartoon, or photo, for an eye-grabbing page. The introductory information is lively, with the appeal of "believe-it-or-not" that can lead to more delving. (Are all toads frogs? Is the Great Sphinx's face that of a woman?) While beginning readers will find the texts a challenge, the contents, treatments, and formats make these books terrific choices for reluctant and even remedial readers. --Ruth M.
