Engaging critically with theories of modernism, postcoloniality, and global and local cultural studies, Shih analyzes pivotal issues--such as psychoanalysis, decadence, Orientalism, Occidentalism, semicolonial subjectivity, cosmopolitanism, and urbanism--that were mediated by Japanese as well as Western modernisms.
