Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
With a stomachache in her head and a headache in her throat, not to mention a sore toe, Emily is definitely due for a sick day. Her work-at-home dad takes the day off to find her stuffed animals, put her hair in ponytails, search for the thermometer, and serve her broth with a plastic giraffe in it. Somehow, this ends up being a pretty fun day for Emily and her father, in spite of her having to "swallow up" and Father having to clean up. By the next day Emily is feeling well again--unfortunately, her faithful caregiver seems to have caught the bug now!

Parents and kids everywhere will recognize themselves in this classic from two renowned creators of children's books, Patricia MacLachlan (Sarah, Plain and Tall, a Newbery Medal winner) and Jane Dyer (Oh My Baby, Little One, by Kathi Appelt). Originally published in 1979, this reissue includes freshly updated watercolors from Dyer (the thermometer, when finally located, is digital). Warm, funny, and reassuring, The Sick Day is good for what ails you. It's sure to be a favorite once again with readers with or without tummy- and toe-aches. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Watercolor illustrations by Jane Dyer lend a new look to Patricia MacLachlan's The Sick Day, originally published in 1979. Restful and happy scenes of Emily's father caring for her while she's under the weather play up the gentle humor and tender tone of the text. When she is feeling better, their roles reverse, and Emily takes care of her ailing father.

From Booklist
Ages 3-6. Emily says she has a stomachache in her head and a headache in her throat, so Father leaves his writing room to take care of Emily and put her to bed. He speaks to her tummy, finds her special stuffed animals, plays with her, and cuddles her. He jokes about her outrageous demands, gets irritated when he can't find the thermometer--and then the next day he has caught her bug, and Emily's taking care of him (with Mama home from work to clean up the mess). MacLachlan's affectionate words are still as funny and immediate as when she first published the story 20 years ago, and Dyer's new, tender watercolors express the loving bond between the beautiful preschooler and her Latino dad in the cozy, messy house. Preschoolers will recognize that it's actually fun being sick when you have a loving caregiver who pays lots of attention. Hazel Rochman
