Helping Hounds
Mandy, 12 is the daughter of two veterinarians who run an animal hospital called Animal Ark. Her friend James works alongside her as he shares her love for animals.

An SPCA worker named Danny Davies is in town, making the rounds of schools to give his talks. Mandy and James are excited beyond description that he will be giving a talk at their school. To make matters even better, he has brought Sasha, a beautiful beagle with an interesting resume. The lovable hound worked for the local police department as a "sniffer," that is, sniffing out contraband. Danny has since adopted the hound and his wife is a veterinary nurse.

James and Mandy are delighted that they have been invited to spend a week with the Davies, going on rounds with the hounds. The rounds include paying visits to people who have been reported for animal cruelty and/or neglect. A possible black market bird ring involving exotic birds is another interesting case the team investigates and makes for a good subplot.

On one such visit, Sasha becomes critically injured when she saves another dog who fled from an apartment. The hound was hit by a motorcycle just as she pushed another dog to safety. Luckily, she is rushed to Davies' animal hospital where she is immediately treated.

It's touch and go for the little hound and....let's just say that every good dog has her day. A story that hound lovers find will have them on tenterhooks until reading the last page. As the owner of a beagle, I found this one especially meaningful. A good companion book to this one is "Beagle in a Backpack (Animal Ark Holiday Treasury #8) (Animal Ark Series #45)."

This is a wonderful book and very moving. The excellent drawings and the beautiful little beagle will certainly captivate and delight readers of all ages.
