Editorial Reviews

Review

Moody has done a first-rate job of identifying the barriers to enhancing faculty diversity. She also offers numerous practical strategies and tactics for academic leaders who care about faculty diversity and hope to make a difference. In addition, Moody backs up these recommendations with key references to the most important literature in the field. Faculty Diversity is one-stop shopping for those who wish to make progress in this important arena. -- Denice Denton, University of Washington

[Moody writes] with passion and compassion to sharpen readers awareness of diversity, discrimination, and inequality in academia and to help bring about changes. The value of the book lies not only in its practicality, but also in the theoretical depth drawn from a wide range of sociological, anthropological, psychological, political, and educational literature. The book, written in accessible language, should be read by all higher education administrators and faculty members--both majority and minority--regardless of their position in diversity matters. At the end of the reading, everyone will emerge more educated and inspired for further dialogue.--EMME:Electronic Magazine of Multicultural Education, Vol 8 No 2, Fall 2006

Practical Advise You Can Actually Use5
The author clearly knows what she is talking about. The true value of the book is its practicality. You can use the advice to create an environment in an academic department that supports the success of both minority faculty and minority students. The advice on recruiting and retention of minority faculty is simply unavailable anywhere else. I have personally purchased this book for my dean and the chairs of science departments at my college. It is very important for those hiring faculty to gain the knowledge that this book provides. It is important to note that the good practises she promotes would make the environment in academia better for everyone.
