Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-Lionel is back. In the first of four stories, he thinks that his friend Max is an impostor when he comes to visit because he is so polite-he even asks for a second helping of squash! In another, Lionel is faced with a lunch that includes an upside-down sandwich. His dad put the jelly on first and then the peanut butter. In the third, Lionel takes Jeffrey to a meeting of aliens, only to overhear his sister and her friends plotting revenge against him. In the last chapter, Lionel's home-run ball breaks the neighbor's window and all of his friends take the blame with him. Krensky and Natti have once again created a wonderfully humorous book with lively illustrations done in pencil, colored pencils, and watercolors. Beginning readers will identify with Lionel and his friends in their very true-to-life situations. Not only will they laugh at the funny stories, but they'll also see a little of themselves as well. A definite purchase for easy-reader collections.

Gr. 2^-3. In the first of four stories that deftly convey the joys and anxieties of the primary grades, Lionel's friend Max almost seems like a stranger when he comes over. He helps unload groceries, compliments Lionel's sister's new sneakers, and even asks for more squash at dinner! Clearly, he is an impostor. Natti's lively illustrations show an ethnically diverse group of kids going through a roller coaster of typical moods as Krensky reveals the "truth" about Max and brings each story to a satisfying conclusion. Lionel and his friends have dinner, trade sandwiches at school, eavesdrop on Louise and Emily, and play baseball.
