Product Description

The distinguished explorer and writer recounts his rediscovery of the Bushmen, outcast survivors from Stone Age Africa. Faced with constant attack from all the peoples who followed them, the last of the Bushmen have retreated to the scorching depths of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. After a gruelling trek, van der Post finds the Bushmen, thriving in one of the world’s most inhospitable landscapes, with their physical peculiarities, their cave art and their joyful music-making intact.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile
This first-person narrative about van der Post's expedition to find the ancestors of the Kalahari Bushmen is almost mythic. Nettleton verbally recreates it in a manner similar to a folktale. Van der Post's fascination, awe and respect come forth as the listener gets to know the Bushmen. The enthusiasm and excitement in Nettleton's voice translates itselfÐlisteners are observers to the mighty hunts and the celebratory dances around the fires. Nettleton even teaches some of Bush language by presenting words and their translations, which he reuses often enough to help the listener retain. This beautiful story is almost perfectly told. Any adult interested in anthropology will love this title. S.G.B. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

In moving detail, Van Der Post recounts his search for a primitive group of Bushmen, a once wide-spread people that approached extermination by opposing tribes and Europeans during the last few centuries. Van Der Post, yearning to uncover Bushman culture in its true form, gathers together an expedition and eventually discovers a group in the heart of the Kalahari desert. 8 cassettes.
