Mina loves ballet. She loves her pink tutu. She loves her ballet slippers. But what she dreams about most is flying like a ballerina. At ballet class, Mina practices the five positions and all her dance steps, including plies, tendus, and pirouettes. Over and over again she practices. She is one step closer to flying.

From Publishers Weekly
Geared to a younger audience, Alexa Brandenberg's Ballerina Flying brings readers to the narrator's Tuesday ballet class. "My name is Mina and I love to dance.... But I like ballet dance best of all./ To me, ballet dance is like flying." Watercolor vignettes depict her preparations; on double-page spreads, Miss Viola demonstrates positions on the verso page; opposite, her students practice. French pronunciations are provided.

From Booklist
PreS.-Gr. 2. Children who like dancing will enjoy this delightful encounter with a little girl who dreams of flying with her feet. Mina arrives early to her ballet class in order to watch the older students practice. She loves watching them because they look as if they're floating on air. Mina hopes that with hard work she will learn to fly, too. During class, she stretches, does exercises at the barre, and assumes the five ballet positions. From arabesques to pirouettes, examples of each position are clearly and colorfully illustrated, allowing interested children to assume the proper stance on their own. All dance step names are accompanied by their phonetic spellings to aid in pronunciation. Cynthia Turnquest
