Customer Reviews

Good low cost film scanner4
I bought the Plustek Opticfilm 7500iSE about 10 months ago to scan a collection of negatives and some slides taken mostly on Kodak Gold from 1992 to 2003(probably close to 1500 images). I'm quite satisfied with the quality of the scans, in fact I doubt that results obtained from high end film scanners would be any better. Installing and operating the scanner is very simple. It also came with a nice protective case, which is an added bonus.

However, I must say that the supposedly top notch SilverFast scanning application that came bundled with the scanner, did not live up to it's promise (even after I upgraded to 3.1.1). I found that it required a lot of tedious adjustments to obtain optimal results. After some research on the web, I decided to purchase VueScan (Hamrick Software), which I found to be a much better application, in fact I wouldn't want to use the scanner without it.

In the process of scanning my family collection (which is still not quite finished) I learned that film is much more fragile than I had imagined. Scratches, dust, fading, and other signs of decay are very common, and therefore most images need additional editing with a good photo editor. As far as productivity is concerned it takes me about an hour to scan 24 images. Automatic infrared scratch/dust removal works fine, but doesn't take care of everything (actually I never got it to work very well using SilverFast).

I rated it as a four star because it seems to me that this scanner is a good value for the money. I would have given five stars if it would include a better scanning application (e.g. VueScan). If you don't have thousands of photos to scan, and your pictures are mostly of the family snapshot type taken with an average camera, I would recommend the Plustek 7500i as a great cost effective tool to get your pictures into digital format (which will keep them from deteriorating any further).

Plustek delivers exceptional value5
After many disappoinments trying to scan my 40 year collections of thousands of 35mm slides covering the world, this new plustek scanner does an excellent job with powerful software package. It does justice and improvemnts to some of the older faded slides to provide great digital computer records for cd tranfers. I placed an order for more slide holders directly with the company via fax, the company rep was curtious and professional. However it would be more customer friendly to be able to order directly on web using paypal and that the slide holders hold more than 4 at one time for scanning. regards Thomas , Ottawa, Canada
